The best way to calibrate the cam is by reading the coolant temperature directly from the computer using an ODB scanner using live data function. An IR temperature gun will not be accurate. It is a good idea though. Remember that temperature transfers to the engine metal with a delay. By the time you get the metal temp equal to the calibration point, the internal coolant temperature will be higher.

Do you have access to a ODB scanner?
