You have to replace the speed sensor. Besides showing the vehicle’s speed, the sensor is also used by the computer to control, among other things, transmission shifting.
If the transmission went into fail safe, you are driving your van in third gear only. Not good for long term driving.
The issue with the radio is a known issue with those ford radios. I upgraded mine to a pioneer with built-in handsfree bluetooth, $200.00 well invested.
These vans a much better than the 2004 and later. Take good care of it and it will run good for a long time. Mine has 183,000+ miles and it is running like new.
