Request for info: Custom DVD installation

Accessories and Electronics

When buying our Nissan Quest, we debated (strongly) whether to get the DVD included or get an aftermarket unit. In the end we opted to not get the DVD included for two reasons: our kids are both under two, and one will be rear facing for another year. Secondly, 7 inches is a bit small, isn't it? Another factor was that some aftermarket installers I spoke to told me it was all prewired and it would run me $500 for a DIY, $800 for a basic player installed by them , or $1500 for a OEM installation with 9" screen.

So, if you've done a custom installation of a DVD player with screen(s) -- let us know how you did it!

Custom DVD Part one is done

Well it took me a while to write back. Finally, End of Feb. I bought the DVD player and had it installed. Because of the way I wanted it, It has a hole where the big ol dvd player used to be. Right now I have a rectangular player in a round console, so my next step is to get some fiberglass fabric and try to round everything back out soon and then paint the whole thing glossy black. And the 7 in screen is too small for the family yes but, that one is just for the navigation. Family screen comes later.

Aftermarket DVD installation

Hi all, I have the Nissan Quest Base model and didn't have enough money due to a limited budget at the time for the SE or for the DVD player. Now a year later I am really interested in getting the DVD and navigation upgrade. Unfortunatly, I was told that the base vehicle is not pre wired for DVD or nav. I have found a in-dash receiver that has a 7 in screen and nav capable the Kenwood eXcelon KVT-819 DVD LCD Monitor Receiver. Now I guess the only mission is to find a way to install it. The hardest thing for me will be taking out the dash, I won't be doing the work myself but, before I get it done I need to look at the inside and figure out how I want it and how much space do I have to work with. I have the service disk but I havent checked to see how to take the dash apart yet.

dvd/nav

personnally,I would do the same thing now as I did two years ago. Portable GPS because it can be used as well in my wife's car,and it does'n have to live in the car, and be subject to break ins. There is no mods to make whatsoever on the vehicle.
As far as the DVD, I Have a 9" screen lcd that attaches between the 2nd row or 3rd row seat. The kids can use it in the house or in hotels when we travel. It is compact and versatile. I believe the kids will prefer watching a movie or play a video game at close range rather than looking between the seats to watch what is going on in the dash .Forget it when they're seating way in the back. I saw one this weekend as an aftermarket at circuit city that connects overhead like the original. The prices have come down quite a bit($599). I was almost tempted, but installation must be prohibitive... That's my opinion, good luck and enjoy!

Wireless Headsets

Does anyone know the model of the factory installed DVD player for the 2006 Quest? One of our wireless headsets is not working and I would like to find a compatible replacment. Purchasing them from Nissan will cost in excess of $70 and I think I could probably find a cheaper product that is of better quality elsewhere.

Thanks.

Nice. The Nissan Quest actually has its own enthusiast site. Hope to
see this community grow...
Wow our stories are very similar...
I had just purchased an '05 SE in July. Being a techie (geek), I too
debated whether or not to buy our Quest with the factory DVD system.
When it came down to it, I decided I could get a much nicer setup for
the $1900 MSRP Nissan wants for their system. Plus, I too have time to
decide because our twin boys are 16 months old and will still be in
rear facing seats for a few more months. ...and yes a 7" screen is too small!
Not sure what year Quest you have, but I am trying to confirm that the
2005's are indeed prewired for DVD. I have heard both yes and no. I do
know that 2004 SEs are definitely prewired from the factory. I plan on
doing the install myself.
Unless I find a bigger and nicer screen, the 9" Myron and Davis ANS190
is my first choice. I really like the OEM integration. I want to keep
the system as stock as possible.

As far as a DVD player, my criteria is:
- Can be integrated with the factory stereo, but NOT FM modulated.
- Single DIN size so it fits in the stock location under the passenger
seat.
- Dolby Digital/DTS capable. I plan to work a multichannel audio
processor into the system. - TV tuner
The Boss Audio DVD 3800T seems to meet my needs, however no one is able
to tell me if this will work with the Nissan Bose system. I guess it'll
have to be trial and error. I also don't know if I lose any feature
functionality on the M&D screen if I use anything other than an
M&D DVD player.

I am also researching what it will take to do an LCD info screen swap
from a 2006. The ugly orange screen has got to go!
I'll post updates as I progress with things...

Just ordered some components

Just ordered some components for my custom DVD system:

Monitor: Myron & Davis ANS190 $512.00
DVD w/ TV tuner: M&D AD256T (discontinued, but still available on eBay) $249.00
Pre-amp: Pac Turbo-1 $25

Anyone have any recommendations for good wireless headphones?

DVD- LCD components

I just bought a 2004 quest SE w/o the screens and dvd player. I am also looking at the M&D 9" lcd's and M&D dvd player. Just wondered if you have finished installing and are happy with everything? Also, is it true that the '04 SE comes prewired for the DVD and screens?

Mobil1: Did you finish installing the DVD system?

Mobil1

Did you finish installing the DVD system? If so, how long did it take? Did you have to use the factory repair/service manual to do the installation? If so, where could I purchase one for a good price?

We just purchased a 2006 SE base model (without DVD and Navigation package) and want to do the DVD installation ourselves to save some money. The DVD player you referring to are very hard to find, even on ebay, and we do like the TV tuner feature. Do you know of any other DVD player w/ TV tuner (not Myron and Davis brand) that will work with Myron and Davis LCD display?

Thank you so much for your help. Please send me an email if you have extra information.

TIA
