Wheel n00b question

Wheel and Tire

Will these fit on my 07 Quest?

2005 NISSAN MAXIMA
5 bolt x114.3mm. Rims size 18"x7.5 , off set 40.

I have been researching but I can't wrap my brain around the whole offset thing. Maybe someone in here has more experience with this kind of stuff.

Generally speaking, is it true that if you want to put wider tires you want more offset? The stock tires I have are 40mm offset and 225 tire. The stock tires for the wheels above are 245. What does that mean for the offset? Anything?

Thanks in advance.

Wheel offset

First, let me refer you to The Tire Rack's Wheel Tech and Tire Tech pages. These have tons of good, accurate information.

Keep in mind that I'm not an expert, but here goes. Wheel offset determines where the mounting face of the wheel is in relation to the wheel center plane. For positive offset wheels (like we have), a larger number would offset the mounting plane toward the outside of the wheel. This would move the inside edge of the wheel toward the center of the vehicle, when mounted.

With that in mind, wheel offset does not directly affect what size tire can be mounted on the wheel. However, if the offset (or wheel width) is such that clearance is reduced, a wider tire is more likely to contact something on the vehicle as the suspension moves through its travel.

If you look up the specs of the tire you want to mount on your wheel you should be able to find the range of acceptable wheel widths for the size tire you are looking at. In general, wider tires and lower aspect ratios (lower profiles) should be used with wider wheel widths.

It looks like the 18" Maxima wheel should work on the Quest. You should do some measuring to make sure. With the offset being equal to your Quest wheel, the increase in width would be be split equally between reducing clearance to the inside and the outside. FYI, and in case you hadn't considered it, the diameter of the Maxima's 245 45 18 tire is smaller than our tires. Check availability of the tire size you are considering (and load ratings of those tires).

Easy

The easy way is to call up The Tire Rack (or similar?) and order wheels & tires from them. I'm sure they will help with making sure everything will fit. I've had great luck in getting tires from them.

Of course, all of those Nissan/Infinity wheels floating by on eBay look tempting, don't they? :-)
