Detailed Text Instructions for Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Picture links were dead for me. So here's my 10,000 words of instructions...

AS experienced on my 2007 Quest 3.5 S (no Bose amp to deal with)

REMOVE GLOVE BOX
1) Open glove box door, use Phillips screwdriver to remove 2 upper screws.
2) Close glove box door. Get down on the floor and remove 3 additional Phillips screws. Set 5 screws aside.
3) Look at the RH side of the glove box as the door welt trim goes over the RH edge of the glove box assembly. You can try to remove the welt, but I didn't. If you try, use a plastic stick (sometimes called a finesse tool) to make sure you don't scratch anything.
4) Carefully pull (tug) the glove box assembly back towards you just a couple of inches. It's held in place by several plastic snap clips.
5) On the upper back side of the assembly, twist (about 90*) and remove the glove box light connector.
6) Set the glove box assembly aside. NOTE: The glove box assembly front is painted and is easily scratched. Set it on a towel or blanket.

REMOVE FILTER(s) ACCESS DOOR
7) Look to the lower left side of the opening you just created. Just above the passenger side step light, you should see some horizontal A/C aluminum piping and 6" above them an electrical connector. On my vehicle, the connector is white.
8) IN between these 2 points and further left, is the filter access door. Molded in black plastic, it is about 1.5" wide and 5" tall, held on by 3 7/32" hex-head screws. With a flash light, you can read the molded-in text on the door.
9) Remove the electrical connector by pushing on the lock tab and pulling back.
10) SLOWLY remove 3 7/32" screws. I used a socket on the end of 1/4" screw driver. I also positioned myself so I could keep a finger on the screw while turning it so the screws wouldn't drop.
11) Remove the filter door.

REMOVE THE FILTERS (Top & Bottom)
12) I used needle nose pliers to grip on to the top filter and pull it sideways and out.
13) I was able to also remove the bottom filter using the needle nose pliers as well.

INSTALL THE FILTERS (Top & Bottom)
14) The filters are directional, so pay attention to the airflow direction. Airflow direction is towards the vehicle rear, and also noted on the filter access door.
15) I purchased the filters from the dealer. Still Made In USA!!!! Worth it to me.
16) I held the filter from the top-RH corner, making it easier to keep it horizontal while inserting. Filter dropped down easily to be in the bottom. I used a pair of channel locks (or a steel ruler would be good) to gently tap the filter down again just to have peace of mind.
17) Same procedure for inserting the top filter. No need to tap this one.

RE-ASSEMBLY
18) Re-install the filter access door. Again, be careful not to drop the 3 screws.
19) Re-connect the white electrical connector. It should "click" into place.
20) Carefully retrieve your glove box assembly and position in place to re-connect the glove box light.
21) Push the glove box assembly back into place, hearing the plastic snap clips click.
22) Turn on your headlamps and confirm the glove box light is working. If yes, turn the lamps back off. If no, remove the glove box assembly again and look for the problem.
24) Re-insert the 5 Phillips screws. The are screwing into metal. If you can find the original threads, it will take less effort. Bottom 3 screws were the most challenging and I was on my back doing this.

25) Enjoy some fresh and clear air.

Quest 2004 cabin airfilter

I just replaced mine for the first time. thanks to MX95Q04 for the detailed explaination. The factory had jammed my top filter in and squashed it. Once you get the filters out the botton goes in pretty easy. The top one will jam against a plastic housing to the front of the van. Use a thin piece of plastic or a thin metal ruler about 18 in long 3 in tall as a guide. Put it on top of the bottom filter to the front and the top filter just slides right in. Took me about 30 min from taking out the glove box to putting it back in. Used a Napa for about $22.00

Will be changing it this weekend

Did take out the glove box and I see a panel that is pretty far back on the left hand side close to the floor under the center console with three screws that is in tight spot. It will be difficult if that is the access door to the Cabin Filter.

How to change the Cabin Filter

1. Remove the glove box:
-7 Phillip screws, 4 on the top, 3 on the bottom
-Two snap on next to the two outer screws on top
-Remove the glove box light

2. Remove the Bose radio amp for easy removal and installation of the filter later

3. Disconnect the electrical connector on top of the cabin filter access door and move aside

4. Remove the three screws using 7/32 wrench (the bottom screw will be very difficult to take out so 7/32 wrench is a must)

5. Remove the two filters, one on the top and one on the bottom. The bottom one you will have to pull up and out.

6. Now install the new filters. Make sure the filters are install facing the right direction of air flow as indicated on the filter and on the access door. The top filter might be tricky to install because the housing is not a perfect slot to slide in the filter. You might need a thin piece of cart board to help guild the filter in.

Thanks so much for detailing the instructions

Thanks so much for detailing the instructions. I was able to follow them and change out the cabin filters in my wife's '06 Quest without a problem. I definitely wouldn't have been successful without your tips. Thanks!

What a complete pain in the

What a complete pain in the ass that was. My neighbor is a service manager at Nissan. They only charge one hours labor + filter costs to change these out. My fear after seeing how difficult this is, is they will remove the old filters and not replace the new ones! Firstly, the ONLY difficult part in this entire thing is getting the 2nd filter into place. I didn't have to take the bose radio out. All 3 7/32 screws were easy to get to with a socket screwdriver. One note: do not unscrew any of the screws all the way. I lost the very bottom one and it's in no mans land. Not too important since the other two hold the door on tight, but my suggestion is to unscrew by hand the last little part. Getting the filters out was a snap, Putting the first one easy was fairly easy as well. The second filter that fits on top kept getting hung the last few inches no matter what I did. I ended up getting made and stuffing it in :-) Several pleats got screwed up, but no tears or rips. It eventually just popped in and straightened out. They should have made guides for these. Most cars I've changed these on have solid brackets and guides. There are only 5 screws to get the 2007+ glove box out. There are plastic snap trim pins that help to secure the glove box. It wasn't difficult to get out. There is an A/C plug that you must unplug directly in front of the filter house and you will have to twist the glove box light plug out. Like I mentioned, everything was easy up until the second filter had to go in. If the filters would have had solid outer shells it would have made this much easier. You would have to take the amp out, but that's only 4 screws/bolts.

2008 Quest Update

On the 2008 Quest, there are only 2 screws on top of the glove box/lower panel. There are still three screws on the bottom.

Pins hold the unit in place. It is hard to get a grip and pull at the top. So, I first coaxed the top left pin out using a screwdriver as a pry. Be sure to protect the soft upper panel with cardboard or a clean putty knife. Then move over to the top right and around to the door trim.

However, I used a 7/32 inch socket on the end of extensions and a flexible drive to get in to the filter housing screws. Also be wary of sharp edges on the metal brace that holds the lower side of the glove box.

Use a stout rod such as a foot ruler or hacksaw blade to ensure the first filter gets full down in the box. This will help with pushing the second filter in place.

Overall, this first attempt was not worth the savings over the dealer doing the work. However, next time, proper preparation and knowledge will provide savings and satisfaction. 8-)

Awesome post!!

This is one thing which normally gets neglected and I'm truly greatful for the posted instructions for this. As a suggestion, can this be place as a sticker post for future reference for other Quest '04+ owners?

The instructions are great. I however deviated (ehhhhmmm, got lazy) from the instructions. I did not remove the amp nor unplugged the electronic plug. I managed to perform the work without doing so. Also instead of the wrench, I used a screw driver with an adapter for the 7/32 socket which works just as well...note reach from the bottom behind the lower glove box bracing bar.

You are correct about the replacing that top filter...it was a pain. I figured out a way around that using the plasic bag and the tape which came with the new filter. With the new filter in the bag and it placed close to the edge of the opening bag, I pinched the filter to taper it off slightly and then used the bag and tape to hold it in position. The new filter (with bag) slid in like butter after that. I manage to remove the plastic bag while keeping the filter in place...hold the filter in place while forcing the bag out which will cause the tape to slip and voila.

Cabin Filter??

This is a great post. I tried to get the guys at the dealers Service Counter to tell me where this filter was and how to change it. One guy had a "deer in the headlights" look and the other told me "There isn't a filter in the cabin". And they both had confused looks when I asked "If there isn't a filter in the cabin, why do the guys in Parts have them in stock?"

Sheesh-That's why I rarely rely on my dealer for service any more.

Best place to buy the cabin filter?

Great pics--been wondering how to do that myself. However, does anyone have a cheap source for the filter? Seems like the last time I checked it was $30 or more online and even higher at my local dealership.

Garandman's picture

Dealer

I paid around $30 at the dealer, cheaper than eBay or online dealers after shipping.

Cabin air filter price

I've ordered non-dealer parts from RockAuto.com in the past. Their price looks to be $27.79 for a WIX brand filter.
