Engine revs up and down when trying to accelerate.

1993 - 1998 Nissan Quest

I have a 97 Quest, recently the engine started to rev up and down when I try to accelerate by pressing the accelerater and the car can not gain speed. I took it into a shop and the mechanic thought it might be the knock sensor or the fuel injector. He ran his diagnostic tests and they both turned up negative. He is not sure what to do. The problem comes and goes so naturally it didn't do it when he went for a test drive. It happens more when I drive it a round and turn the ignition off and then restart the car. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you resolve this?

Hello !I had a problem like

Hello !
I had a problem like this, but not shure is the same. I solve the problem changing the spark plugs ( for 3 electrodes, platinum ) and change the wire set too. I cleaned the contact in the coil that was sulfated with #500 sand paper and w40 and a lot of patience, cleaned the rotor cap with sand paper too but I used almost no pressure and then cleaned the contact with towel paper wet in electrical safe solvent. If you press the sand paper you can damage the contacts, if you preffer you can buy a new cap and rotor.
You can check for a faulty spark plug taking off the wire with the engine runing, if the engine make no difference in revolution or don't show a fail, this spark plug is damaged. If the engine change revolutions or make any fail that you can sense, this spark plug is good.
Another thing that you may check is the intake air meter, if this sensor have a defect, it can make the same problem that you have, rev. up, then rev. down and can go up and down for short periods or very long periods, because the computer can't adjust the fuel/air mix to be steady.
If you find what was wrong, please, post it here so we can learn something else.

engine reving up and down

Try checking the the AC compressor. I have a 96 Quest and the pressure switch went bad and would turn the compressor on and off causing the same type of engine performance. Hope this helps

Transmission slipping?

Is it a real poncho or a Sears poncho?

Transmission slipping?

Picked mine up today from getting my trany repaired.

I have a code for the o2 and ping sensor also but the way
it was reving they thought the idle motor was gone.

I checked it and found the cable for the cruise was sticking.
removed the vacume line and pulled the throttle closed and the
problem cleared up.
