Rotten Egg Smell

Beau313's picture

I have a 2004 Quest and I have taken it back to the dealership 5 times for my van stinking of rotten eggs. They tell me to use high test gas. I used Sunocco 94 for 3 months, then they tell me to use mobil high test, then they tell me to use just regular Mobil... Anyone notice this smell or is it just our van??? Please send any replys to beausauto@aol.com. I am very interested to know. I purchased this van in 7/05 w/ 1,100 miles on it and since spent $1,496.60 on high test gas and only put on 9,750 miles. If you figure it out it cost me $6.91 per mile to drive this van.. Please help!!!

rotten egg

I recently purchased a 2003 altima and after driving it one day I started noiticing the smell. I was told to change my fuel since the check engine light was not on. Sometimes my eyes burn from the smell.

Bad Math

Haha, you got your math backwards...

You only spent $.15 a mile (that's 15 cents). 8-)

Rotten Egg Smell here as well....

My 07 SE smells the same after aggressive acceleration and is very annoying and embarrasing cause the people behind you wonder why your new car stinks! I asked the dealer and they said there is nothing wrong, and of course they said nothing. Funny, but the test van I drove didi the same exact thing, but sales person said it was probably a bad catalytic converter and they would replace it. If the catalytic converter is bad wouldnt it smell the whole time?

I am hoping one of you check back and describe how you resolved this problem. Thanks!

Same here...

I've got a 2005 SE and have notice the smell. I asked the dealer to look at it and told them I thought the cat. was bad, but they said they wouldn't do anything about it since the check engine little wasn't on. I mostly notice it after driving up a hill or having the engine under a load. Seems to me like the cats. are getting to hot.

Rotten Egg Smell

I too have this problem with my 2004. My dad is a recently retired Nissan Master Mechanic. He thinks it is the cat converter too. I am in the process of contacting Nissan about it.

Rotten egg smell usually

Rotten egg smell usually indicates a bad catalytic converter.

Other Cars

Toyota Corolla has also had an issue with this in the recent past. Clark Howard (a product and financial reporter) did a report on it. Their mechanics said the cat was fine. They did find that it was too close to the engine. The extra heat that it gained from its proximity caused it to smell as it reached higher temps. This is also why our vans stink, especially after hard driving.

Reply to bad cat. for rotten egg smell

Both myself and the dealership I bought the van from agree that it is the cat. but there is no check engine light on and they will not replace them... but they agree with me. If enough people are having this problem Nissan told me they would have to have a recall, but lucky me I am the first to complain or so they say... Anyone else having this problem really needs to contact Nissan direct... Thank you.. :)

Dad please, my friends are here...

I took my 6 year old and the neighbors kids to the park yesterday and the car 'let one out'. The girls were all watching the DVD movie with headphones on so the car was quiet when all of a sudden the smell hit them. Each gave the 'ough whats that smell' sound/face and my daughter pulled off her head phones and snapped at me "Dad please, my friends are in the car!" To which I responded "Dutch oven Ha ha!"
So yeah, C'mon Nissan, Recall these goofy stinkbomb Cats! While it makes for crude humor, it may cost a father the love of his daughter!
