Front heater blower--extreme vibration???

Timo1's picture

Our 2005 Quest has a problematic heater blower. It demonstrates random vibration and seemingly very high RPMs. The vibration is quite severe--you can feel it in the steering column. It seems to occur most shortly after driving the car. As the auto temp control calls for heat, the blower runs at a high rpm. However, it generates significant vibration during this period. Once set temperature is achieved fan slows to lower rpm and the vibration subsides (although still more vibration than original). I believe one of the blower motor mounts may have failed causing the motor to lose balance and therefore vibrate. So I would like to access the blower motor for inspection. Is it accessible through the center console? Any ideas on how I might gain access to the front heater blower?

thanks,
Tim

I also have the extreme

I also have the extreme vibration in my 04 quest blower. When I switch into anything higher than 2 on the fan speed, it becomes very loud and the vibration is very noticeable. When I put the selector switch into max AC and look into the bottom vents which open up, I can see 6 blades missing on the driver's side of the blower. the imbalance is causing my vibrations. I've had the center console apart as far as I dare to and see no entrance to the blower housing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The blower motor is located

The blower motor is located underneath the speedometer cluster. Pry the top cover off the top of the cluster, then remove the speedometer cluster screws, I think 4 screws, unplug the harnesses from the back of the speedometer and put cluster aside, then remove the black cover off the fan box, again I think 4 screws. and then unplug and remove the blower. Then clean out all the foam and insulation that is lodged in the blower vains, this is whats causing the vibration. You probably had a mouse in there starting to make a nest with all the insulation from the dash. I had to do this twice due to a mouse getting in there somehow, I still can't figure out how he's getting in.

Thanks for the info, James.

Thanks for the info, James. I did get into the blower housing the way you described and was able to remove the entire blower. Unfortunately, no parts stores around me can sell it or the squirrel cage fan. Guess it'll be off to the dealer to get the parts... if they can.
Thanks again,

Jeff
